Vanguard Kanohi are ornately-crafted masks that originated from a distant island.  In modern times, they are most often granted to individuals who have accomplished truly remarkable feats, setting them apart from their peers with their distinctive designs.  Masks may also be fashioned in these shapes if their bearers wish to honor or emulate a heroic figure.
